Everyone’s go-to takeaway platform JustEat has brought four of the UK’s most in-demand traders to Manchester for a three-month residency – and hosted competition winners and special guests at a supper club two stories below the beautiful Barton Arcade.
The Brickworks is a large, multi-use basement space just below the Arcade which has been sitting empty since 1961. The owners of Barton Arcade have redeveloped it into a spacious and characterful event destination. JustEat brought the chefs from Dirty Bones, Buns & Buns, Bun & Bao and Bird to the subterranean space to delight some of the city’s food enthusiasts – with a soundtrack provided by local duo The Rush.
We were served a sharing menu of some of the takeaways’ most interesting and exciting dishes.
To start, Dirty Bones’ delicious, creamy macaroni cheese arancini balls, made with taleggio cheese – alongside their buffalo wings, which were tender and moreish. The corn fritters left a little to be desired next to the punchy flavours of the other starters. However, they were also served with some excellent sauces – blue cheese to complement the wings, and a garlic mayonnaise.
Next up, the opportunity to try Buns & Buns’ garlic prawn bao; the fried chicken, cheese and bacon burger from Bird; and a bitesize cheeseburger. The spectacular bao was wonderfully heavy with garlic and spice, and certainly shone through as the menu item of the night.
Bird managed to show why their chicken and waffle selection is so popular. The chicken slider was packed with great taste and texture, and topped with a great sauce.
These came with some brilliant sides – Korean fries, a cabbage slaw, and a savoury and complex baby gem salad. They offered a great counterpoint to the guilty pleasure mains. To finish, diners were served a tasty, though far from groundbreaking, brownie and crème fraîche.
If you want to try the country’s favourite takeaway names for yourselves, then good news! JustEat have set up premises just outside the city centre, and will be offering delivery of the very best from Bird, Dirty Bones, Buns & Buns and Buns & Bao across most of the central district.
